Green Belt

Ontario’s Greenbelt is an area of permanently protected green space, farmland, and vibrant communities. It stretches 325 kilometres over 1.8 million acres, stretching from Northumberland County to the Niagara River, to the tip of the Bruce Peninsula, including part of Grey County.

The Greenbelt contains Canada’s largest network of hiking and recreational trails, including the Bruce Trail, the Trans Canada Trail, and the Oak Ridges Trail. They span thousands of kilometers and a variety of terrains.

The Greenbelt preserves some of the best agricultural land in Canada, which in turn provides an assortment of produce to Ontario.

The lakes and rivers in the Greenbelt provide clean drinking water for millions of people and provide important habitat for wildlife, while the protected trees and plants help filter air pollution, producing clean oxygen for the various regions.
