Crunching the Numbers: How do We Measure Our Industry’s Success?

On November 20th, Grey County led an industry group in a Tourism Metrics workshop. The focus of the workshop centered on understanding our visitors to Grey County, measuring their travel patterns and spending habits and using those insights to grow our County’s tourism industry. Twenty-nine Grey County DMOs and tourism businesses, attended the 3-hour session led by Tourism Manager Bryan Plumstead and representatives from RTO7 and BruceGreySimcoe’s T3 Accelerator Program assisting with three breakout groups. The workshop reinforced the need for our industry to capture data on Grey County’s tourism arrivals and their related expenditures/spending by addressing some key questions:

What tourism data and statistics are most important to Grey County tourism partners?

What tourism statistics are already being collected by Grey County Tourism and can Environics Analytics serve any role to our partners?

How can tourism partners share the tourism data that they collect with the County?

How can tourism businesses use this statistical data in their marketing and communications programs and campaigns?

All agreed that measuring tourism performance is an important tool in highlighting tourism as a vital contributor to Grey County’s economy, and that the best way to collect most of this data is through an industry survey.  Watch for Grey County’s survey coming soon!
