Caving
Caves are a plenty in Grey County left from thousands of years of glacial ice. All offer their own unique experience, climate and natural habitat. For self guided caving, there are several nature reserves and conservation areas that offer great caving experiences. For a more in depth caving experience, check out Scenic Caves or contact Free Spriit Tours for a guided outing. Here are a few hot spots for caving in Grey County:
Metcalfe Rock
Three caves are easily accessed at Metcalfe Rock in The Blue Mountains. "It's amazing the size of some of the rooms," says Matt Code of Free Spirit Tours, "There are some tight squeezes, but many of those open into amazingly large rooms." Guided tours are available of Metcalfe Caves through Free Spirit Tours.
Bruce's Caves Conservation Area
Located outside Wiarton, Bruce's Caves consists of 7 hectares of rock formation, wooded swamp, Niagara Escarpment and caves. The Bruce Trail runs through the property for some great hiking opprtunities as well as caving.
Scenic Caves Nature Adventures
Experience the natural wonders at Scenic Caves Nature Adventures where the caves plunge hundreds of feet. In the summer seasons it's common to see rare species of flora and fauna growing in the crevices and not abnormal to spot snow. Scenic Caves is rich with interpretive history onsite, reflecting the area's first inhabitants.
Duncan Caves Nature Reserve is located in The Blue Mountains, west of County Road 2 on 9-10 side road. The caves have been formed by huge rock formations falling away from the escarpment's rock face.
