Paddling

Whether your love is canoeing or kayaking Grey County has a paddling experience that is sure to entice both enthusiasts.

Check out this awesome paddling video shot in Grey County this summer:

Sydenham River

One of Grey County's most historically significant rivers offers a great paddle from Harrison Park in Owen Sound to the East Boat Launch in the Bay.  Also one of the most picturesque rivers with views of marshland, historical homes, the Niagara Escarpment, wildlife and many species of birds.  Don't miss the bird sanctuary at Harrison Park and some of downtown Owen Sound's great attractions.

Beaver River
Canoeing Beaver River

The gentle flow of the Beaver River, navigable from Kimberley to Heathcote, is a perfect place for beginners. Named for the many Beaver found along its 40 kilometres, this river was used as a transportation route during the 19th century. Three sections on the Beaver feature rugged scenery, wildlife including great blue heron, great horned owl, white-tailed deer and of course the beaver, as well as angling opportunities. Distances range from 6 kilometres to 15 kilometres.  Access is available at Grey Road 13 north of Kimberley, Epping side road and at Heathcote.

Saugeen River

The Saugeen River canoe route begins in the Town of Hanover and heads west to Lake Huron. Though it flows through agricultural areas, these are only visible occasionally through the forests, which line the bank of the river.River conditions range from wide placid stretches to areas with eddies and rapids, making the Saugeen ideal for family canoeing. Sections range from 20 to 43 kilometres, but the ambitious can make a real trip of it by traveling from Hanover to Southampton, a distance of 102 kilometres! Campgrounds are available. The Durham Conservation Area also has a day use area featuring a millpond or over-night camping along the banks of the Saugeen River. Many other lakes and rivers provide a plethora of paddling opportunities.

Sea Kayaking at Northwinds

For the more adventurous, sea kayaking on Georgian Bay is a great way to explore the majestic shoreline.  Northwinds Beach near Thornbury, Colpoy's Bay near Wiarton or the Owen Sound Bay are good places to start.  Go on your own or with an outfitter - either way, let someone know about your route and timing, and stay tuned to the weather.  Check the marine forecast before heading out.
