I am currently the ‘Youth In Highlight’ columnist for The Post and a member of the Cultural Round Table for the town of Hanover. As a high school student with a true love of literature, I look forward to opportunities where I can write, meet new people and discover the hidden gems of our community.

It is the week before Christmas and you are wandering down the main street of Hanover, Ontario. Twinkling lights adorn heritage square and homes are decked out for the Residential Decoration Contest. You are sipping a warm, festive beverage as you slowly check off the last few names on your gift list. As a local, I would like to recommend a few shops that you should be sure to check out when buying those last minute gifts!

Bruton’s Decorating

On main-street, in a unique, caramel coloured building featuring elements of traditional German architecture, resides Bruton’s Decorating. Petra and Alex Serratore truly felt the stars align when they heard the previous owner, Neil Bruton, planned to retire and sell his already well established business. With backgrounds in design, this dynamic duo has spent the past ten years in urban supply chain roles which has informed their business practices. Petra, an internationally certified interior decorator and home stager with a flare for social media marketing, worked with her partner to roll out new branding, followed shortly with a renovated, modern store front.
Bruton’s beautifully developed website has made 75% of their home decor sales since March.
Alex handles in-home consultations for blinds and shutters. Whether you are looking to add a modern touch of Christmas to your home, redecorating over the holidays or looking for a unique gift item, Bruton’s Decorating will no doubt inspire you! Their home decor is fresh, modern and affordable. Plus, if you are not sure what your special person would like, they offer gift cards as well!

Teenie Tiny Tot’s

As an advocate for the environment, I am impressed by one of Hanover’s newest businesses. Teenie Tiny Tot’s, owned and operated by Angie Christensen, already has established stores located in Palmerston and Wiarton. Her successful consignment based business model offers high quality, lightly used inventory. Teenie Tiny Tot’s keeps children’s clothing and toys circulating, bettering both our environment and our local economy.

As a mother of three children, Christensen’s business was inspired by her understanding and empathy for young, growing families living on a budget. The clothing she offers both in store and online is high-quality, reasonably priced and absolutely adorable.

Ashanti Coffee

A well established coffee shop in downtown Hanover, managed by Natalie Telford, offers freshly brewed, single origin, direct trade, locally roasted coffee and espresso-based drinks.
Their beans are grown in the eastern highlands of Zimbabwe using sustainable and ethical practices to support the local community. There, they are picked, dried and sorted before travelling, by ship, across the Atlantic and up the St. Lawrence river. Once they have arrived on land, they are delivered to Thornbury where they are roasted and distributed to Ashanti’s four locations. Fortunately for us, one of these locations is right here in Hanover.
Aside from their coffee, Ashanti offers a variety of teas, house made sandwiches and baked goods. Well known for their Montreal style bagels and delicious sweets selection, this is the perfect spot to stop for a meal or to grab a warm beverage before hitting main street to complete your last minute Christmas shopping.
While there, you can also purchase gift boxes with chocolates, short bread cookies, festive napkins and other holiday treats for your loved ones! While the menu is delectable, it is not the only reason locals love this café. The inviting atmosphere of Ashanti makes it a popular setting for locals whether it be old friends catching up, students cramming for exams or families enjoying a quiet brunch together. This holiday season, Ashanti offers a new festive drink each week. Stop in to see what special flavour is being served!
