Craigleith Shale Oilworks 1859 Heritage Plaque

The distillation of bituminous shales to obtain crude oil was an early attempt to meet the growing demand for oil. William Pollard's shale works at Craigleith operated for four years until the discovery of more accessible oil at Petrolia and Oil Springs rendered the cumbersome shale process obsolete. Located near the site of the former oil works, at the east end of Craigleith Provincial Park, Highway 26.
