The Walking Village goal is to promote and enhance walking in the south Grey area, through, for example, walking enhancements, such as street and trail improvements, benches, bridges, signs, blazes and maps and through marketing and promotions. The Walking Village also offers several free guided walks every year. These have included a Foraging Walk, a Wildflower Walk, and several Heritage or historical walks in regional hamlets and villages. Each year the Walking Village participates with Jane’s Walk (May) with a themed and guided free two hour walk. Additionally, the Walking Village has worked in the Flesherton Hills, with the Environmental Studies Program at the Flesherton high school (Grey Highlands SS) in support of trail maintenance and bridge building, for instance. We have sponsored special tours and hikes in the area, for example, a Halloween Spirit Walk and we work with Grey Sauble Conservation, for example, to re-blaze the Flesherton Forest looped trail. In 2011, we undertook, with tools from ICanWalk, a Walking Assessment of the Village of Flesherton and presented the report to Municipality of Grey Highlands council. This presentation resulted in the improvement of walking on Village streets in several areas. The Walking Village has produced a promotional brochure, which includes a guide to trails and descriptions of walking areas.
