What to Gather: Grey County Packing List and Tips

Published Date:

Whether you're planning a visit to Grey County for hiking, uncovering hidden swimming holes, or simply taking time to slow down, packing smart can make all the difference. So, what should you bring? This thoughtfully curated packing guide is practical, enjoyable, and safety-conscious. It's designed to help you make the most of your Grey County escape.

The Essentials

Clothing Layers

Ex) Raincoat, Sweater, Hat, Shorts, Jacket, etc.

Even in summer, Grey County weather can surprise you. Pack light layers. Include things like cozy hoodies, breathable tees, and a waterproof windbreaker.

Footwear for All Terrains

Ex) Running Shoes, Flip Flops, Slides, Boots, etc.

From riverside trails to sleepy towns, you’ll want comfy sandals for the beach, sneakers for walking and maybe some hiking boots if you’re planning on getting serious.

Reusable Water Bottle

Many local spots will fill your water bottle for you if you ask, and staying hydrated is key especially with the heat of summer.

Sunglasses

Sunglasses are a must! The sun can be surprisingly strong, especially when it reflects off water or snow (if you're here in the shoulder seasons). Plus, they double as the perfect accessory for those weekend getaway photos.

Compact Umbrella or Rain Poncho

Grey County weather loves to keep you guessing. A sunny morning can easily shift into a misty afternoon, especially near the escarpment. Pack a small umbrella or a foldable rain poncho just in case, it’ll keep you dry and stylish as you wander local shops or explore a trail. Bonus: it comes in handy for surprise sun showers and misty hikes near waterfalls!

For the Long Days Outdoors

Daypack

A small backpack to carry snacks, sunscreen, bug spray, and your camera. Try to pack light!

Bug Spray & Sunscreen

Mosquitos love a good forest stroll as much as you do. Protect your skin and bring some bug spray. Also make sure you bring sunscreen; the blistering sun can sneak up on you sometimes.

Swimsuit & Quick-Dry Towel

You might just find yourself at the lake, chasing waterfalls, or jumping into a river. Bring a spare bathing suit and towel with you in case you feel spontaneous

Binoculars or a Nature App

Whether you’re birdwatching in the escarpment or trying to ID local wildflowers, a little nature nerding goes a long way. Pack a small pair of Binocular or download a nature app, you might learn a thing or two!

If You’re Staying at a Cabin, BnB, or Campsite

Flashlight or Headlamp

For those late-night marshmallow runs or if you're camping off-grid. Make sure you have some source of light just to be safe.

Blanket or Shawl

For starry nights by the fire or sunrise coffee on the porch. It cools off at night, especially if you’re in a forest or near water.

Board Games or a Deck of Cards

Cell service can be spotty. Unplug and get competitive. We suggest Uno or just a classic pack of cards!

Food Staples & Snacks

Many towns have local groceries, but if you’re deep in nature, stock up on trial mix, coffee, and breakfast staples. Fuelling your body is important if you're exerting a lot of energy.

Fun Add-Ons

Camera or Instant Film Cam

It's important to stay in the moment but there are so many photo opts in Grey County we can't blame you for snapping those moody forest paths and ice cream smiles.

A Good Book

Perfect for winding down in a hammock reading or curling up after a day of exploring.

A Journal

Grey County has a way of slowing you down in the best way. A journal is perfect for capturing reflections from a quiet moment at the harbor or jotting down the name of that artist you discovered at the local gallery.

Safety First

First Aid Kit

Even just a travel-sized one with Band-Aids, antiseptic, and any personal meds. Its good to be prepared for anything that gets thrown your way on your trip.

Portable Charger

Especially important if you’re using your phone for maps or emergencies. You want to make sure your phone is as charged as possible whenever you're going out, especially in nature.

Offline Maps or Downloaded/Paper Trail Guides

Grey County has amazing backcountry and conservation areas often without service, so you should make sure you have something extra in case you lose your way. We have many brochures and map options available for downloading or to be mailed directly to your home. Click here!

Some Quick Tips

Taxi Logo

No Uber Here!

Grey County is beautiful but spread out. Rideshare apps like Uber or Lyft don’t operate here, so plan ahead! Renting a car is your best bet or check with your accommodation since some local B&Bs offer shuttle services. If you're staying in town, many areas are walkable and bike friendly. Grey county also has some taxi services you can check out as well.

Need Info on the Go?

Stop by Grey Roots Museum & Archives just outside Owen Sound for maps, local tips, and tourism info. The staff can help you find trails, historic spots, and hidden gems you won’t want to miss.

Shop & Dine Local

Many small towns close earlier than city hours, especially on Sundays. Check ahead for restaurant hours and make reservations when you can. And don’t forget cash, some farm stands and small shops are cash-only!

Grey is Dog Friendly

Traveling with a pup? Many trails, patios, and even shops are dog-friendly. Just keep your furry friend leashed and bring water for them too. Take a look at our Dog Blog for places to visit with your furry friend.

Packing for Grey County is about balancing the cozy and the rugged, the planned and the spontaneous. With these essentials (and a few personal touches), you'll be ready for waterfalls, wildflowers, waffles, and whatever else the weekend brings. So, zip up that bag, lace up those boots, and we’ll see you on the trail!
