From gentle river floats to big water challenges, this guide highlights some of the best spots to launch, paddle, and soak in the natural beauty.

Beaver River

Route: Kimberley → Heathcote

The Beaver River is one of the most beginner-friendly and scenic paddling routes in Grey County. Flowing gently through the heart of the Beaver Valley, this peaceful river is framed by lush forests, farmland, and escarpment cliffs. It’s a great choice for birdwatchers and nature lovers—herons, turtles, and beavers are common sights.

Beaver River

Access Points:

  • Access Point 1 – Grey Road 13 (North of Kimberley): This roadside launch site is the most upstream put-in and marks the beginning of the classic paddling route. There's roadside parking, and it’s a good place to launch for a full 12–15 km day trip.

  • Access Point 2 – Epping Side Road: A popular mid-point access for those wanting a shorter route (approx. 6 km paddle to Heathcote).

  • Heathcote Park Take-Out: The river flows into Heathcote where a small public park makes for an easy and convenient exit. Picnic tables, washrooms (seasonal), and parking available.

Saugeen River

Route: Hanover → Southampton

The Saugeen River is one of Ontario’s best-known paddling routes, stretching over 100 km through Grey and Bruce counties. Landscapes shift from rolling farmland to forested banks and rocky shores, making it ideal for multi-day trips or immersive single-day adventures.

Public Launch Sites Include:

  • Hanover: Access near the town center for short-day trips or to begin longer excursions.

  • Paisley: A favorite mid-way town with parking, rest stops, and quaint cafes.

  • Walkerton and Durham: Both have local launches that connect to Saugeen’s longer routes.

  • Southampton/Denny’s Dam: The final take-out if you're doing a full-length paddle.

Sydenham River – Owen Sound

This urban-to-nature paddle offers a unique experience, floating past parks, trails, and waterfalls. The Sydenham River cuts through Owen Sound, making it perfect for a gentle afternoon paddle.

Harrison Park

Access Points:

  • Harrison Park Launch: A well-maintained public park with canoe/kayak rental access, washrooms, and parking. The paddle downstream to the Mill Dam is easy and scenic.

Georgian Bay & Lake Huron Coastal Paddling

For big water adventures, Georgian Bay and Lake Huron offer crystal-clear waters, rocky shorelines, and island views. These open waters require attention to weather and wave conditions.

Meaford Harbour

Launches:

  • Balmy Beach Boat Launch (Grey Rd 1): A seasonal launch site in Georgian Bluffs with a boat ramp, dock, and paid parking (permit required).

  • Wiarton Marina: Offers both powerboat and paddler access to Colpoy’s Bay.

  • Meaford Harbour: Access the bay for kayaking around the shoreline or exploring nearby fishing hotspots.

Lake Eugenia

A man-made reservoir in Grey Highlands, Lake Eugenia offers calm waters, good fishing, and plenty of coves to explore. Surrounded by cottages and forest, it’s a relaxing spot with easy access.
