The Saugeen River canoe route begins in the Town of Hanover and heads west to Lake Huron. Though it flows through agricultural areas, these are only visible occasionally through the forests, which line the bank of the river. River conditions range from wide placid stretches to areas with eddies and rapids, making the Saugeen ideal for family canoeing. Sections range from 20 to 43 kilometres, but the ambitious can make a real trip of it by traveling from Hanover to Southampton, a distance of 102 kilometres! Campgrounds are available. The Durham Conservation Area also has a day use area featuring a millpond or over-night camping along the banks of the Saugeen River. Many other lakes and rivers provide a plethora of paddling opportunities.

Celebrate the season in Grey County with fall fairs, apple harvests, scarecrows and more!

Alas, it’s fall now. Around Grey County waterways, that means one thing: the salmon are running inland, out of the depths, back to the places of their birth, and back into plain view.

I am lucky enough to work in Thornbury, but rarely have the time to enjoy everything it has to offer; for a town with such a small footprint, it sure has a lot going on! So, I sweatered up and stepped out to check out some new instant favourites on the other side of Bruce Street.
