A provincial land surveyor, Rankin began surveying the Nottawasaga Bay area in 1833, settling west of present-day Thornbury. His surveys included several townships in Grey County and a number of colonization roads which were intended to attract settlers to the newly opened territory. Located in Bayview Park, Bay Street, Thornbury.
